Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski of Poland has embarked on a landmark journey as a mission specialist aboard Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) to the International Space Station (ISS), marking a significant step forward in his career and for Poland’s role in human space exploration. As a member of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Astronaut Reserve Class of 2022, Sławosz was selected from a highly competitive pool of over 22,500 candidates, positioning him for future missions beyond Earth’s orbit. Fluent in English and proficient in French, Sławosz’s extensive academic background laid the foundation for his spaceflight career. He earned his M.Sc. with honors from Łódź University of Technology in Poland in 2008, complemented by a second M.Sc. and Diplôme d’Ingénieur from Université de Nantes and Polytech’Nantes in France. His expertise was further honed through a doctoral dissertation completed in 2011 at the University of Aix-Marseille, focusing on radiation-tolerant designs critical for space applications. Professionally, Sławosz contributed significantly to the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva. From 2018 to 2020, he served as Engineer in Charge for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), overseeing its complex round-the-clock operations. His work as a reliability expert and project lead underscores his deep technical proficiency. Outside the laboratory, Sławosz pursues high-altitude mountaineering, sailing, and exploring remote regions, embodying a spirit of adventure that complements his scientific endeavors. His participation in the Ax-4 mission marks a new chapter in this journey of exploration and discovery, reflecting both his personal dedication and Poland’s growing presence in the international space community.
