John O. Creighton (Captain, USN, Ret.) is a former NASA astronaut born April 28, 1943, in Orange, Texas, and raised in Seattle, Washington. A graduate of Ballard High School and the U.S. Naval Academy, he also holds a master's from George Washington University. Creighton served as a Navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and project officer, logging over 6,000 flight hours, 500 carrier landings, and 175 combat missions, including deployments to Vietnam. Selected as a NASA astronaut in 1978, he piloted STS-51G and commanded STS-36 and STS-48, spending more than 403 hours in space. His many honors include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Legion of Merit, NASA Distinguished Service Medal, and the French Legion of Honor. After retiring from NASA and the Navy in 1992, Creighton continued his aviation career as a test pilot with Boeing.
