Bio

James A Lovell Jr, was born on March 25, 1928, in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1952, and served as a naval aviator and test pilot, logging over 7,000 flight hours, including more than 3,500 in jets. He was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1962, and flew on four space missions, Gemini 7, Gemini 12, Apollo 8, and Apollo 13, becoming the first person to travel to the Moon twice. Apollo 8 was the first crewed lunar orbit mission, and Apollo 13 was a mission that was aborted after an oxygen tank failure, but returned safely to Earth. Lovell retired from the Navy and NASA in 1973, and later held leadership roles in several companies. He received numerous honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, and multiple international space awards. He died on August 7, 2025, at his home in Lake Forest, Illinois, at the age of 97. Courtesy of NASA.
